Ford Expedition vs. Chevy Tahoe

Ford Expedition vs. Chevy Tahoe: Which Is Right for You?
Weighing the Ford Expedition vs. Chevy Tahoe SUVs? Both full-size SUVs seat a crowd across three rows, tow a sizable trailer, and come in an extended-wheelbase version for extra cargo. The Expedition leans on a twin-turbo V6 in two tunes, while the Tahoe gives you two V8s and a diesel. Cabin size, screen size, and towing ratings separate the two, but the answer depends on what you’re pulling and how many seats you fill. Bob Moore Ford sells the Expedition, so we’ll call each section and let the numbers settle it. Browse our new inventory to see every Ford Expedition for sale on our lot, then compare below.

Ford Expedition vs. Chevy Tahoe Performance and Towing
Both SUVs use 10-speed automatics and offer two-wheel and four-wheel drive. Here’s how the engines compare:
| Engine: | Horsepower: | Torque: |
| Expedition 3.5L EcoBoost V6 | 400 hp | 480 lb-ft |
| Expedition 3.5L EcoBoost V6 High-Output | 440 hp | 510 lb-ft |
| Tahoe 5.3L V8 | 355 hp | 383 lb-ft |
| Tahoe 6.2L V8 | 420 hp | 460 lb-ft |
| Tahoe 3.0L Duramax diesel | 305 hp | 495 lb-ft |
Here’s how the towing and fuel economy figures compare:
| Spec: | Ford Expedition: | Chevy Tahoe: |
| Max towing | 9,600 lbs | 8,400 lbs |
| Fuel economy (standard engine, 4×2) | 16/23 mpg city/hwy | 15/20 mpg city/hwy |
| Highway range (diesel) | Not offered | Up to 624 miles |
The Expedition’s standard twin-turbo V6 makes more horsepower and torque than the Tahoe’s 6.2-liter V8, and the High-Output version widens that gap. Properly equipped, the Expedition also out-tows the Tahoe, so if you pull a camper or a boat, the Ford is the stronger tow vehicle. The Tahoe answers with choice, and its Duramax diesel delivers EPA-estimated highway range on a tank that the Expedition can’t match for long-distance cruising. Both SUVs offer a trailering app and a four-wheel-drive system with selectable modes, with the Expedition adding Rock Crawl Mode on the Tremor. We prefer the Expedition’s twin-turbo torque for towing, but if you’d rather have a diesel or a traditional V8 sound, the Tahoe has you covered.

Interior Space and Cargo
Both SUVs seat seven or eight across three rows, and the Tahoe stretches to nine with a front bench. Here’s how the cargo space compares:
| Spec: | Ford Expedition: | Chevy Tahoe: |
| Seating | 7 or 8 | Up to 9 |
| Cargo behind row 3 | 22.9 cu ft | Not published |
| Cargo behind row 2 | 69.9 cu ft | 77.5 cu ft |
| Max cargo | 108.5 cu ft | 122.7 cu ft |
| Extended version | Expedition MAX: 37.4 / 84.5 / 123.1 cu ft | Suburban (not compared here) |
The Tahoe is the roomier of the two standard-length SUVs, with 122.7 cubic feet of maximum cargo space against the Expedition’s 108.5. It’s also the only one that seats nine, so if you need every seat filled and the cargo hold packed, the Chevy wins on space. The Expedition MAX closes that gap with 123.1 cubic feet and 37.4 cubic feet behind the third row. If you want Tahoe-level room in a Ford, the longer body gets you there. Both SUVs offer heated front and second-row seats on their upper trims. The Expedition adds the Ford Split Gate, a powered two-piece tailgate that doubles as a seat or a loading platform. We’ll give the interior section to the Tahoe on space, and you can size up the Expedition MAX at our Ford dealership in OKC if cargo is your priority. Technology is next, and both SUVs bring plenty of it.

Technology and Safety
Screens are a strength for both SUVs, and each takes a different approach. The Expedition pairs a 24-inch panoramic display across the dash with a 13.2-inch center touchscreen. The Tahoe runs a 17.7-inch center touchscreen, the largest in its class, with Google built in. Both offer hands-free highway driving, and both let you keep it on while you’re towing. Ford BlueCruise works on 97 percent of controlled-access highways and comes equipped on the King Ranch. Chevy’s Super Cruise is available across the Tahoe lineup and now pairs with the diesel. A rear camera mirror is available on the upper trims of each, and the Tahoe’s 15-inch head-up display on the High Country answers the Expedition’s panoramic layout. Audio comes from a Bose Centerpoint 10-speaker system on the Tahoe Premier, and the Expedition’s available Flex Powered Console slides between the rows for storage. We’ll call the technology section a draw, with the Tahoe’s bigger single screen against the Expedition’s two-display layout. See the panoramic display in person at our Ford dealership in OKC, and check our new vehicle specials while you’re there.
Which Should You Choose?
The Chevy Tahoe wins on cargo space and seating, and it’s the only one of the two with a diesel. The Ford Expedition wins on power and towing, with 9,600 lbs of capacity and 440 horsepower available, and the Expedition MAX matches the Tahoe’s room. If you tow more than a couple of times a year, we’d steer you to the Expedition. Find your Ford Expedition for sale at Bob Moore Ford in Oklahoma City today!
